Special Olympics is a global organization that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is staggering.
The Power of Sport.  For every Special Olympics athlete, there are many more waiting for their chance.

It’s at the local level--right here--where interested volunteers meet the athletes. That’s where the perceptions start to change and where the miracle of transformation takes place.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

Healthy Athletes - Special Olympics Health Initiative

The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Program provides comprehensive health examinations free of charge to athletes with intellectual disabilities in seven disciplines by volunteer medical professionals. On December 4th and 5th Special Olympics will host a key conference focusing on the health of people with intellectual disabilities in Graz, Austria. The aim of the conference is to highlight the health status of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) using data collated at Special Olympics Healthy Athletes events. The challenges and needs for adapted medical and preventive care for people with ID will be debated and the medical disciplines of Audiology, Optometry, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Health Promotion will be a focus. Furthermore participants will discuss how national health care systems can learn and benefit from the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative. There will be a panel discussion with contributions from politicians, researchers from the fields of medicine and science, medical professionals and Special Olympics Healthy Athlete staff to put forward practical proposals to ensure the health challenges facing people with intellectual disabilities within our health systems are met. Presentations and discussions will be held in German and English. The conference also provides an opportunity for participants to learn more about the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games taking place in Austria and how to get involved.
