Basketball for Everyone

2013 marks the 10th Special Olympics European Basketball Week, an annual event that calls on the entire European basketball community to get active in promoting more opportunities in the game for people with intellectual disabilities.
This year the week will take place from Saturday, November 30th to Sunday December 8th with 18,000 Special Olympics athletes participating in 200 basketball events, matches, clinics and exhibition as well as 20 National Tournaments across 33 countries.
EBW 2013 will also include celebrations of The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities which falls on December 3rd.
The 10th anniversary of European Basketball Week will bring a particular focus on encouraging more females with intellectual disabilities to participate in Special Olympics basketball.  Today in Europe 57,954 athletes including 19,129 females are registered as Basketball players.  The goal is to reach 60,000 players by the end of 2013.
2013 European Basketball Week once again enjoys the full backing of FIBA Europe, Euroleague Basketball and more than 25 National Basketball Federations across the region.  Rounds 6 and 7 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Basketball Regular Season will be dedicated to One Team and Special Olympics with some of the most-recognised names in basketball sharing the court with Special Olympics athletes and donning the Special Olympics symbol on their jerseys.
Here is what some of the leaders in European basketball have to say about EBW:
“We are proud to continue offering our platform to raise awareness and support for Special Olympics in Europe. Special Olympics athletes remind us of the true joy of the game and so they are an inspiration to the rest of the European Basketball community.”
- Jordi Bertomeu, Euroleague Basketball CEO
“After 10 years FIBA Europe continues its endorsement of Special Olympics European Basketball Week because Special Olympics uses sport as a catalyst to transform the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and to promote respect, acceptance and inclusion.  We hope that the 10th edition will be the biggest and most inclusive yet so that more players with intellectual disabilities get a chance to take part.”
- Kamil Novak, Secretary General FIBA Europe
