North America

North America has 544,581 athletes participating in all 30 sports offered by Special Olympics.  It is home to athletes from Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.  Special Olympics is dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.

Unified on the Court in North Carolina

By Rebecca Ralston

Energy was high and the competition was fierce as students from the University of North Carolina, along with Special Olympics athletes from Orange County, took on the Duke Blue Devils and local Durham County athletes in the first Special Olympics Unified Sports basketball game.View Story Energy was high and the competition was fierce as students from the University of North Carolina, along with Special Olympics athletes from Orange County, took on the Duke Blue Devils and local Durham County athletes in the first Special Olympics Unified Sports basketball game. Despite a tight game and aggressive play, the home team pulled away with the victory – the game’s final score was Duke – 42, UNC – 37. Nearly 400 students and community members came out to support the teams and shared in the energy, passion and determination of Unified Sports.

LSU Unified Team

By Samantha McMillian

Through Project UNIFY and SO College, youth in Louisiana have found a voice and established themselves on 5 college campuses and in over 35 high schools.View Story Through Project UNIFY and SO College, youth in Louisiana have found a voice and established themselves on 5 college campuses and in over 35 high schools. Students throughout these schools have participated in the Special Olympics Unified Sports® program which pairs athletes with intellectual disabilities and their peers without intellectual disabilities. SO College allows students involved in their high school to transition and continue their Special Olympics involvement once they progress to college. If not for programs such as Unified Sports, hearing impaired athletes like Roy Mernard would sit on the sidelines. Roy is a local high school student and a member of the Special Olympics Louisiana LSU flag football team. He works well with his teammates, unified partners and coaches, he is finally able to compete in a sport that he loves and excels at. Partnering with LSU and this unified flag football game specifically has brought awareness to Unified Sports, SO College and will showcase the abilities of our athletes.

The team from the University of Alabama has been practicing together for the last few months to prepare for the big game against LSU. This is the beautiful thing about Unified Sports.

Unified Track: Breaking Down Barriers, Together

By David Albertini

David Albertini, a Unified Sports partner in Massachusetts.

David Albertini, a Unified Sports partner, said, "Having unified track at our school last year was really fun -- it was amazing to see all of the athletes at Lunenburg High School running on the same track. While we may be all of different speeds and skill levels, we were all athletes."View Story Having unified track at our school last year was really fun -- it was amazing to see all of the athletes at Lunenburg High School running on the same track. While we may be all of different speeds and skill levels, we were all athletes and we were all looking to compete. There were no labels on anyone except for their lane numbers. This is something anyone would appreciate, runner or not. I have to admit that I was uncertain as to how this whole thing would work out, but after the first practice I realized we had a lot more in common that I thought. We were all athletes and wanted to get better and win. At the final meet at the end of the season with all the unified track teams, it was hot out and on an artificial turf surface, but it was so much fun to see every person on that track trying their best. There is something to be said about people who try their best and are proud of it. I think a lot of misconceptions and barriers came down during that meet.

About David Albertini :Starting senior year at Lunbenburg High School, Massachusetts, looking back on my first experiences with the power of Unified Sports.

Unified Volleyball - Just as fun as the first time!

By Chris Parker Hunt

Our Team name was the "DC Stars"

My second round of playing Unified Volleyball with Special Olympics athletes from District of Columbia, proved to be just as rewarding and fun as the first time.View Story My second round of playing Unified Volleyball with Special Olympics athletes from District of Columbia, proved to be just as rewarding and fun as the first time. We definitely had more time and space to practice all season and all of us improved. During the Summer Games opening tournament we won 2 out of 3 games – all against tough opponents and we walked away with 5th place participation ribbon. We will have to work harder to get the gold! One of the athletes I play with was featured on the local news…Check it out. Jerome is amazing! Can’t wait for next season when we compete again and hope to make it to the medal round!

About Chris Parker Hunt:I am the VP of Strategic Gifts and Development Operations at Special Olympics and I am happiest when playing Unified Sports!
