Special Olympics Athletes at Global Forums

By David Evangelista

Jared Niemeyer and Lucy Meyer

Special Olympics athletes Jared Niemeyer and Lucy Meyer traveled to New York City to represent Special Olympics at two global forums where they addressed key representatives from the United Nations, UNICEF and civil society.View Story In early June, Special Olympics athletes Jared Niemeyer and Lucy Meyer traveled to New York City to represent Special Olympics at two global forums – The United Nations Conference of States Parties to the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the meeting of UNICEF's Global Partnership on Children with Disabilities Youth Council – where they addressed key representatives from the United Nations, UNICEF and civil society, speaking about their hopes for equality for all children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and the critical need to include those with ID in the post-2015 development agenda. Jared and Lucy provided global recognition of the power of using sport as a catalyst for inclusive development worldwide. They were also warmly welcomed by UNICEF’s Executive Director, Anthony Lake, during a reception introducing the Youth Council to members of the Global Partnership on Children with Disabilities, together with Caryl Stern, CEO of the US Fund for UNICEF.

So what 'I HAVE DOWN SYNDROME"

By Karen Bradshaw, Proud Mom and Supporter

Special Olympics is a part of my son's life and will always be. Thanks to the organization for making my son feel that he can compete in sports!View Story Wanted to go back 22 years to where SPECIAL OLYMPICS first entered Blake's life. As he turned 30 this month and still competes. Special Olympics has meant everything to Blake as he loves all sports. Not being able to compete in the "typical" sports through public school, softball throw and 50 meter run came into this little boy's life and the rest is nothing but awesome!!!!! He then went to swimming, which was self taught by me and his father, and excelled for 3 years until, at the age of 16 found PowerLifting and the last 15 years has competed at Area and State levels breaking all kinds of records for himself. By being a powerlifter he has worked out at a local World's Gym for 10 years meeting all kinds of people whom have embraced and shared in his accomplishments. As a mom, I could ask for nothing better!!!! Special Olympics is a part of his life and will always be!!!!! Thanks to the organization for making my son feel that he CAN COMPETE IN SPORTS!!!! Yes he can and has!!!

About Karen Bradshaw, Proud Mom and Supporter:I am a very proud Mom, that has seen her son (Blake) go from a 8 year old softball thrower to a medaled athlete in Powerlifting the last 22 years. WOW, what an impact having Special Olympics has made in his life.

One Year To Go For 2015 World Summer Games

By Christy White

When the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games open in July 2015, it will be a world stage for people with intellectual disabilities to show their strength, skill, courage and determination.View Story When the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games open in July 2015, it will be a world stage for people with intellectual disabilities to show their strength, skill, courage and determination. The Games in Los Angeles, California, "will change the lives of people around the world who are mistreated and excluded because they’re ‘different,’” said Patrick McClenahan, President and Chief Executive Officer of LA2015, the Games Organizing Committee. The Games also are a chance for spectators and volunteers to have their preconceptions about people with intellectual disabilities changed forever. Getting involved with the Games by cheering from the stands or handing out cups of water to thirsty athletes is a sure way to change your view of people of all kinds. Special Olympics World Games -- and all of the 80,000 Special Olympics competitions that occur every year--invite the public to see the talents and capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities. It's a way to open eyes, to change attitudes and to break down barriers that have excluded people with ID from the mainstream of community. The 2015 Games will feature competitions in aquatics, gymnastics, track and field, basketball, football (soccer) and many other summer sports involving 7,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from around the world.'Los Angeles is set to welcome more than 7,000 Special Olympics athletes from 170 nations to compete in 25 Olympic-type sports.

Over 63 girls were outfitted with a sports pac, brand new running shoes and socks, and new uniforms - including shorts and special shirts. Upon receiving her shoes, and after opening ceremonies, each girl rotated to the sport activity of her choice including: Bocce, Basketball, volleyball, and soccer. After a nutritious lunch (the second meal of the day provided by Camp Shriver), the girls broke out into various activities while awaiting their personal medical screening. Over the course of 2 and a half days, each girl was seen by the team of 2 nurses and a Doctor provided by l’Hopital DASH. An extraordinary effort - demonstrating true partnership -- thanks to the driving force, Leslie Lishon Sosnowski and BoulderShares(R). We are grateful for her and many sponsors support!

You step to the edge, look over, and catch your breath. Adrenaline takes over and, next thing you know, the thrill of adventure consumes you. Welcome to Over the Edge — an adventure for the truest fans! Special Olympics Virginia invites you to go Over the Edge in Richmond. Not for the faint of heart, participants who raise a minimum of $1,000 will find themselves rappelling down the SunTrust Center in downtown Richmond — all to support Special Olympics Virginia. And organizations also can band together to “Toss Their Boss” for the cause. Extreme adventure. Extreme community impact. Trust us, you won’t be the same person by the time your feet reach solid ground. For information visit www.overtheedgeva.com or follow us on Twitter @OverTheEdgeVA.

On October 25, 2014, when you fire up your engine at The Meadow Event Park, home of the Virginia State Fair, you will be joining thousands of other truck drivers throughout the United States and Canada, all of whom are driving with two goals in mind: 1) to form the largest procession of trucks the world has ever seen and 2) to build a bigger, better community for the amazing athletes of Special Olympics. In Virginia, this convoy takes place on Interstate 95 near Richmond and is organized by the Virginia State Police as part of their annual Law Enforcement Torch Run efforts.
