Unified on the Court in North Carolina

By Rebecca Ralston

Energy was high and the competition was fierce as students from the University of North Carolina, along with Special Olympics athletes from Orange County, took on the Duke Blue Devils and local Durham County athletes in the first Special Olympics Unified Sports basketball game.View Story Energy was high and the competition was fierce as students from the University of North Carolina, along with Special Olympics athletes from Orange County, took on the Duke Blue Devils and local Durham County athletes in the first Special Olympics Unified Sports basketball game. Despite a tight game and aggressive play, the home team pulled away with the victory – the game’s final score was Duke – 42, UNC – 37. Nearly 400 students and community members came out to support the teams and shared in the energy, passion and determination of Unified Sports.

Lots of talk about physical disabilities on July 26th. Is Intellectual Disability forgotten?

By David Egan

Ashley Count and David Egan at the Eisenhower Building on the ADA 22nd Birthday

On July 26th,2012, Ashley Counts and I represented Special Olympics International at the Eisenhower Executive Building where we were celebrating the 22nd Anniversary of the American Disability Act witView Story On July 26th,2012, Ashley Counts and I represented Special Olympics International at the Eisenhower Executive Building where we were celebrating the 22nd Anniversary of the American Disability Act with a panel of representatives invited by the White House to share their accomplishments and challenges promoting and securing the rights of people with disabilities. We listened very carefully to every speaker and were a little astonished that none of them spoke about the needs of people like Ashley and me who have intellectual disabilities. Encouraged by Ashley, I raised my hand: "I have not heard you speak about Intellectual Disabilities and am wondering how it is being represented in the President's agenda" There was lots of silence in the room. Eyes turned and finally Kareem Dale responded that work is underway with a bipartisan representation with Senator Tom Harkin and Congresswoman Cathy Mc-Morris Rodgers. Valerie Jarret closed the session and chatted with Ashley and me. I hope we had an impact on the session and from now on, they will not forget people with intellectual disabilities.

About David Egan:I am an Athlete from Area 26 in Vienna, Virginia. I love Special Olympics and serve as a Global Messenger. I love sports. I am a swimmer, tennis and ping pong player. I compete in Soccer, Basketball, and Softball. I also love to talk about the "Dignity Revolution" that Tim Shriver is promoting.

Friends Forever, the Surprising Lesson of Special Olympics :-)

By Robin Schermerhorn

One of David's friends gives him heartfelt praise

Recently I attended a birthday party for a friend, David Egan, from Virginia who was turning 35 years old. The party had all the ingredients for a wonderful time--pizza, games, dancing, music, and runView Story Recently I attended a birthday party for a friend, David Egan, from Virginia who was turning 35 years old. David is a Special Olympics basketball player, soccer player, swimmer and much more. The party had all the ingredients for a wonderful time--pizza, games, dancing, music, and running video of accomplishments displayed nearby. The cake was cut and served. I thought that the party couldn't get any better. Then attendees in the room were invited to speak. I expected to hear sweet birthday wishes and funny comments of past occasions, especially since his family members were such jokers. One of his friends took the microphone, stood tall, took a deep breath, and with his sensitive and inspiring speech blew me away with his compassion for both his friend and the ties that bound them through the Special Olympics. I felt humbled in the presence of a spirit in the room bigger than any one of us there. The presence of Special Olympics in these men and women empowers and enables them to think beyond athletics to having a social network of close friends; friends forever.

About Robin Schermerhorn:I am a parent of a son, Mason, who participates in several activities yearly with Special Olympics. The organization has had a very positive impact on my son's life.
