Europeans Most Open to Those with Intellectual Disabilities Education may play a role in receptivity

Gallup surveys in 112 countries in 2010 show people's perceptions of how receptiveGallup surveys in 112 countries in 2010 show people's perceptions of how receptive their communities are to those with intellectual disabilities vary worldwide. More than half of adults (55%) with an opinion on the matter say the city or area where they live is a good place for people with intellectual disabilities. Perceived receptivity is highest in Europe, where 80% say their communities are good for people with intellectual disabilities, and lowest in the former Soviet Union (47%) and Asia (46%). their communities are to those with intellectual disabilities vary worldwide.

Open Water Swimming Makes Big Splash in Athens

In the latest effort to provide a meaningful and competitive opportunity for swimmers seeking a greater challenge, the Special Olympics World Summer Games held the first-ever open water swimming event July 1, 2011. It was a 1500-meter demonstration event in the Aegean Sea near Athens, Greece. Thirty-five Special Olympics athletes took part.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Welcomes First Visitors to Healthy Athletes

Visitors like U.S. professional basketball player Yao Ming and partners such as UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake and Past International Lions Club Director Ernst A. Musil were on hand Sunday as Joanna Despotopoulou, President of the Games Organizing Committee, and Special Olympics COO Brady Lum officially opened the Healthy Athletes venue. Following the ribbon cutting, athletes from Senegal, Puerto Rico, and Malta were among the first to receive free health screenings in six health disciplines.
