Supporting Children & Adults with Intellectual Disabilities to reveal their true potential through the joy of Sport

Principality of Monaco: Special Olympics, the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities today marked the first anniversary of Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco as Global Ambassador.

In what already promised to be an exciting and busy year for the Princess, She took on the additional role of taking the Special Olympics’ message of inclusion and respect to a worldwide audience. According to HSH Princess Charlene: “Special Olympics is a movement that has always been close to my heart as it uses the power and joy of sport to help people with intellectual disabilities reveal their true potential while transforming attitudes around the world.”

Some of the highlights of Her Ambassador role over the past 12 months include Her attendance at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece just days before her marriage to HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. On this occasion, HSH Princess Charlene marked the new chapter in Her life by leading both Team Monaco and her home country, Team South Africa, in the Parade of Athletes.

In March 2012, Princess Charlene joined fellow Special Olympics Global Ambassador and NBA basketball star, Yao Ming, for a visit to the Shanghai Pudong Special Education School in China where they spent time with instructors and administrators and enjoyed a game of volleyball with the athletes.

The Princess has also supported a number of Special Olympics fundraising events   including the Amber Lounge Fashion charity auction which has raised significant funds for Special Olympics during the Monaco Grand Prix week-end for two consecutive years.

As a Global Ambassador, HSH Princess Charlene is part of a select group of athletes and celebrities  dedicated to spreading the message of the Special Olympics movement worldwide. These include names such as celebrated footballers Dani Alves and Kaka, Olympic medalists Michael PhelpsApolo Anton OhnoScott Hamilton, and Nadia Comaneci; golfing champion Padraig Harrington; actor Zhang Ziyi , and performer Vanessa Williams.
