Every athlete aims in lifting more weights than the opponent using specific moves. In Special Olympics Powerlifting is much more than deadlift, squat or bench press. It is effort, persistence and loyalty. Training, determination and attitude, are the key facts that define the balance between a successful or a failed attempt. The barbell, despite testing the physical strength, is also highlighting the athlete’s inner wish to improve, “not to make compromises."

The International Powerlifting Federation, which is the international governing body for the sport of powerlifting, has been supporting Special Olympics lifters for years. In April 2013, the IPF and Special Olympics agreed to work together to grow the sport worldwide for people with intellectual disabilities. For example, Special Olympics athletes competed during the 2013 Women's and Men's World Masters Powerlifting Championships in Orlando, Florida, USA. The IPF has agreed to share its expertise in Special Olympics powerlifting skills workshops.

Powerlifting - APF California State Meet

This event is an APF sanctioned powerlifting competition with a full-meet consisting of the squat, bench press and the deadlift. Athletes can also enter a single event such as the bench only, deadlift only or both deadlift and bench only without competing in the squat. This competition is open to regular open lifters and there is a Special Olympics Division as well. The Special Olympian Division awards a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophy and medals to 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, etc. to each participant in the division. 24 hour weigh-in rule applies. There will be one weigh-in from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 20th, 2015, another weigh-in offered Friday, March 20th, 2015 between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and again the day of the competition on Saturday, March 21st, 2015 between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Rules briefing is between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The lifting will begin with the squat at 10:00 a.m. For more information and entry forms please refer to the contact information below.

Oklahoma State Summer Games

Special Olympics Oklahoma athletes numbering in the thousands will meet in Stillwater in May for Summer Games. Staff and hundreds of volunteers are on hand to make sure athletes have three days full of competitions, Olympic-style ceremonies, Olympic Village, food, housing and many fun activities. Special Olympics Oklahoma athletes will compete in nine sports: Athletics (Track and Field), Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Horseshoes, Powerlifting, Unified 3-on-3 Basketball, and Unified Softball. Other events include Motor Activities and Stars of the Future.

Arkansas State Summer Games

The Special Olympics Arkansas Summer Games will be held at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. This event will bring together over 2,000 athletes and 500 coaches from across the state. This our largest event of the year, Summer Games features competition in aquatics, athletics, bocce, unified bocce, flag football, golf, powerlifting and team softball. Every race, every game, every competition held at Summer Games represents many weeks of training, preparation and dedication on the part of our athletes, coaches, and volunteers.

Hawaii State Summer Games

Over 1,000 Athletes and Coaches from throughout the state will participate in our Summer Games at the University of Hawaii and Central Oahu Regional Park. Athletes began training in February and are competing in Area and Regional competitions from the end of March through the beginning of May in preparation for the Summer Games. Massachusetts State Summer Games

The official start of the Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games begins with the traditional Opening Ceremony at Boston University. Highlights include remarks from special guests, one of our athletes acting as master of ceremonies, the Parade of Athletes, the Special Olympics Massachusetts flag relay and presentation and finally the culminating Torch Lighting Ceremony, by the Guardians of the Flame–our partners in the LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY. Saturday morning the games will begin on the grounds of the Harvard University athletic facilities, surrounding historic Harvard Stadium. Over 1,900 ATHLETES compete in the sports of aquatics, gymnastics, powerlifting, tennis, track & field and volleyball.

Virgina State Summer Games

Summer Games, our largest State Games, is nothing short of legendary thanks to the overwhelming support of more than 3,000 local volunteers who brave the summer heat to assist more than 1,300 Special Olympics Virginia athletes each June. Athletes come from all corners of the state to compete in bocce, swimming, softball, track & field, bowling, powerlifting, and tennis at the University of Richmond and surrounding venues in Richmond. We are fortunate to have all of our Event Volunteer needs assigned for this year's Summer Games. We are currently recruiting Volunteer to Cheer fans and Medical Team members!

Illinois State Summer Games

Summer Games is Special Olympics Illinois premiere sports competition with more than 4,000 athletes and Unified Partners competing in 6 different sports, along with 1,600 coaches, 2,500 volunteers and 3,300 family members. That totals more than 11,400 people who attend Summer Games! The Summer Games are held at Illinois State University in Normal and the Illinois Wesleyan University campus in Bloomington. A variety of activities are provided for the participants in addition to the sports competitions. Competition will be offered in athletics, aquatics, bocce, Unified bocce, gymnastics, football (soccer) and powerlifting. World Summer Games Los Angeles 2015

In July of 2015 more than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries will come to Los Angeles, California for the Special Olympics World Summer Games and enjoy 10 days full of joy, friendship and competition. Athletes will compete in 22 sports. The event expects to attract 500,000 spectators and 30,000 volunteers and 3,000 coaches.
