About Dikembe Mutombo

In 2012, Dikembe Mutombo was recognized as a Special Olympics Global Ambassador.

Dikembe Mutombo is a National Basketball Association (NBA) legend and NBA Global Ambassador. He is also a retired Congolese American professional basketball player, best remembered as a star center for the Houston Rockets of the NBA. The 7 ft 2 in (2.18m) center is one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players of all time, winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times. On January 10, 2007, he surpassed Kareem Abdul‐Jabbar as the second most prolific shot blocker in NBA history. Other NBA honors included NBA All‐Rookie Team (1992), 8‐time NBA All‐Star, 3 time All NBA, and 6 time All Defensive Team. A well known humanitarian, Mutumbo started the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo. On August 14, 2006, Mutombo donated $15 million for the completion of the Biambe Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa named after his late mother who passed away of a stroke in 1997.
