Bocce is an Italian game. The basic principle of the sport is to roll a bocce ball closest to the target ball, which is called a pallina. Booce as a Special Olympics sport provides people with special needs the opportunity to have social contact, develop physically and to gain self-confidence. Next to soccer and golf, bocce is the third most participated sport in the world.

Sheer dedication and commitment made Pooja Shanker become an International medallist

By Prof. Subodh Shankar

Success Smile

Pooja, a star performer in bocce, missed a chance to play in the 2011 World Winter Games in Korea, but she was chosen for the 2013 Asia Pacific Regional Games. She aspired to be an International medalist. For this, she persuaded her coach to give her the best practice.View Story Pooja, a star performer in bocce, got severely depressed for not having been selected for the 2011 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Korea, and and nothing helped her to overcome this problem. Later on, her selection to Asia Pacific Regional Games-2013 gave her an impetus to overcome her depression. Slowly, she started recovering. But she aspired to be an International medallist. For this, she persuaded her coach to give her the best practice. At the Asia Pacific Games in Australia, she appeared fully committed to win at least one medal. However, in doubles match her team could only reach up to 4th place. But, this did not deter her to perform well in future events. Finally, on 5th December, after a set of 2 games she was declared the bronze medallist in F-24 division. This was a great moment for her, as well as for all the spectators and well-wishers.With this success, she was totally thrilled and looked as if she has won the biggest battle of her life. Who says these special people are emotionless?

About Prof. Subodh Shankar:I am a professor of Architecture in India. I accompanied her to New Castles. For me, this was life time experience. So many innocent, but committed athletes over there.
