The Special Olympics Michigan State Winter Games debuted its first-ever Unified winter sport at this year's Games as Unified Figure Skating took the spotlight at Traverse City's Howe Arena.View Story The Special Olympics Michigan State Winter Games debuted its first-ever Unified winter sport at this year's Games as Unified Figure Skating took the spotlight at Traverse City's Howe Arena. The Unified partners were just as excited as the athletes to be a part of the Winter Games. "We've watched them work so hard for so many months, we've become a part of it." said Unified partner Amanda Simmons, 17, from Bloomfield. "Their success is our success." This year, four pairs of Unified partners performed at the Winter Games. The pairs only practiced together for a few months before performing their routines together at the Games. After competing Michael said "I was thinking, what if I don't do it? But I just have people that give me confidence." The Unified partners get a chance to see the athletes grow and learn from practice up until they perform. "A lot of the time they come here and it just clicks in the moment." said Rachel.
