Speed Skating today is a lifetime fitness sport for individuals of all ages. Speed Skating provides both cardiovascular and aerobic benefits as well as improving muscle strength, balance, and coordination. Today, the sport can be enjoyed year round with indoor skating facilities found throughout the world. Probably the BEST type of Speed Skating is that which is done outdoors, challenging the skater against the elements of nature that try to test the skater's skill, fatigue and desire to race the wind. As a recreational and competition sport, Ice Speed Skating offers the potential for social integration for both training and competition experiences within multi-level Special Olympics competition experiences as well as training and competition experiences through this sport's National Governing Body.

Determination and Bravery

By Carla Simon

Special Olympics has taught me to not give up and to be brave in the attempt. My story starts with a speed skating race.View Story Special Olympics has taught me to not give up and to be brave in the attempt. My story starts with a speed skating race. In our 2013 State Winter games I competed in a 111 meter race, and I was rounding a corner halfway through the race and I fell on my chin. Not realizing I was injured I got back up and finished the race speeding ahead and passing another athlete. I ended up taking the 2nd place silver medal and after getting my medal I found out I needed stitches in my chin. Never give up, even if you think you can't make it, just try and be positive.

About Carla Simon :Been competing in Special Olympics: 6 Years Medals won: Over 50 Member of Team Arizona for the 2014 USA Games in New Jersey for track and field. Special Olympics Arizona global messenger. Favorite Sport: Track and field
