Getting to Know the Place

By Will Schermerhorn

Watch out behind you...

I arrived in San Juan today, and after getting settled and getting lunch, I went to the beach to see what was going on. The ocean was slamming big waves against a protecting wall of rocks, but the lagoon behind the rocks was just stirred by the wind. The sun was low in the sky, heading for sunset. I saw a group of people in swimsuits getting wet, posing for pictures and drawing in the sand. The bright yellow bags on the beach said "Special Olympics Bolivia." In the picture I attached, one of the athletes is about to have his lovely handiwork, a heart, erased by the wave sneaking up behind his ankles. When the wave crossed the heart, it went away and we all laughed. It was great to be in Puerto Rico, with a few hours to spare. The next few days will be very busy!
