Golisano Foundation Honoree - Mark Orlando

By Karl Hejlik

Dr. Mark Orlando

Mark Orlando, a clinical director with Healthy Hearing, was one of six health care professionals to receive the 2012 Leadership Award for Exemplary Healthcare Services from the Golisano Foundation during its annual luncheon October 18. Dr. Orlando is an audiologist and director of Research and Education in Audiology for the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). He became involved in Special Olympics’ Healthy Athlete program through clinical research he had been doing with the organization and feels that the Special Olympic program not only benefits the athletes with ongoing monitoring but also benefits the volunteers from graduate programs at Nazareth College, Syracuse and the University of Buffalo. He said the experience turns future audiologists into advocates for people with disabilities and gives them the feeling that volunteer work is important to their development as a health care professional. The Golisano Foundation awards are given annually to health care professionals in New York, USA who have demonstrated extraordinary efforts to improve healthcare and access to care for people with intellectual disabilities.
