Today I had the pleasure of providing a tour of SOI to Special Olympics Denmark athlete & Board member Martin Eskildsen and his mom & Football Coach Elin. They had scheduled a trip to the US to visit friends in North Carolina that they made in 1999 when Martin competing in Aquatics in the World Games in Raleigh, NC. They have remained friends with their host town family and every couple years come back for a visit.
This trip has been scheduled around hockey games, but unfortunately the NHL was not compliant and there is still a lock out. But in true sports fan fashion, they filled their time by going to college football Games and even drove to Philadelphia to see the Eagles play.
On the tour we paid respect to Founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver by stopping in her office and reflecting on how much she did on behalf of athletes everywhere during her life.
Martin's day was made when he had a chance to meet Tim Shriver in the hall. With aquatics and running under his belt, Tim challenged Martin to try and compete in the triathlon which will happen for the first time at a World Games in 2015 in Los Angeles.
We can't wait to see Martin compete! Thank you Martin and Elin for reminding me of why I love my job.
