NBA and Special Olympics Day of Service

By Will Schermerhorn

The work crew from Special Olympics included people from the U.S., Namibia, Italy, Puerto Rico and China.

The Houston Food Bank got a flood of volunteers today from Special Olympics Programs around the world, plus several famous names from the NBA and WNBA. The annual NBA Cares Day of Service is part of the NBA All Star weekend. Special Olympics athletes, chaperones and staff went to the food bank in Houston to help with sorting a variety of food and other kinds of donated goods. The Special Olympics group divided into teams of four to work at eight stations on an assembly line. Boxes of things to be sorted moved slowly past each station, ready to be grabbed and sorted. Finished boxes wentt back on the assembly line to be loaded elsewhere. Throughout the three-hour volunteer shift, NBA and WNBA stars stopped by to help sort, sign autographs and have their pictures taken with their fans. It was steady work, but it was fun for everyone to see the famous basketball stars standing next to them, reaching for cans and hoisting boxes.
