O.B. Gates Elementary continues a year long quest to SPREAD THE WORD

By Cindy Kirby

O.B. Gates Elementary in Chesterfield Va. has a 29 year history of promoting acceptance of individuals with intellectual disabilities. From the day the doors opened our 5th grade students have been helpers for our ID students assisting them to the school bus. Last year we held a Spread the Word Youth Rally addressing approx. 1000 students, staff and guests. An original rap song was developed for the occasion and was produced and composed by international recording artist J Plunky Branch. This song was reproduced on 300 CDs with each one being adorned with original art work by Gates students expressing encouragement and acceptance. These CDs were distributed at The Special Olympics Winter World Games in Korea. Gates will continue efforts to SPREAD THE WORD with and additional CDs donated by Best Buy Products at upcoming Local Special Olympic events. We would love to share our song with you.

About Cindy Kirby: I have worked with students with intellectual disabilities for 30 years with Chesterfield County Public Schools. I am proud of our students staff and community for their support in promoting the awareness and acceptance of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
