The Impact Special Olympics Has Had On My Life

By Elizabeth Rawson

Last year,, I was in 6th grade. There was an announcement at our school about a Special Olympics Fan Club meeting. I thought that it would be a lot of fun to join and get to know the people in the club. But actually, the friends that I have made are the ones that I am supporting. Every single one of the athletes are my friends. Some have autism, others have Down syndrome, but that doesn't matter to me. All of the special needs students are amazing and wonderful in their own way. Now, in the mornings, I go and hang out with the athletes and sometimes we make music videos or others times we just talk. Because of these students, I am the Special Olympics Fan Club Ambassador for my school and my mom is going to school to become a special needs teacher. Even though others don't know it, my friends can make a huge impact on other people's lives, and their disabilities don't hold them back.

About Elizabeth Rawson: I am in 7th grade and I am the Special Olympics Ambassador for Pleasant Hill Middle School.
