Importance of Capital Hill Day

By Corey Leonhard

Athlete, Global Messenger and Iowa Special Olympics Board Member, Corey Leonhard shaking hands with Chairman and CEO, Tim Shriver at Capital Hill Day.

On March 6th it was my honor to represent Special Olympics and share my story with Iowa Senator Tom Harkin and Iowa Representative Dave Loebsack. I told them about how I got started in Special Olympics and all the medals I won going to 3 World Games and 2 National Games. I also told them how important jobs, health and education are for our athletes and our friends from Best Buddies. While I was there I got to meet a lot of athletes and coaches. I got to see the Capital and other cool stuff. I also ran into Chairman and CEO Tim Shriver when we were on a tour. He remembered my name from when I met him at National Games in Lincoln, NE. We rode the train together along with Senator Chuck Schumer. I got to thank Tim and talk about how I met his Mother, Eunice and that I thank his family at every speech I give. If it wasn't for their family I wouldn't be in Special Olympics and I wouldn't the person I am today!

About Corey Leonhard: I am a Special Olympics Athlete, Assistant Coach, Senior Global Messenger and I serve on the Special Olympics Iowa Board of Directors as an Athlete Representative. My goal is to give back to Special Olympics Iowa by telling my story and give my message across Iowa to programs and schools. Hopefully, I can help those people start a Special Olympics program in their community!
