Encouraging Youth to Live Unified!

By Meredith Ciaccia

For the second year, Special Olympics Lebanon and the Red Cross of Lebanon teamed up to demonstrate the importance of youth activation in promoting full inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. The organizations put on a series of events for youth with and without intellectual disabilities to share their abilities and participate in Unified Sports® . The events were at Lebanese American University in Beirut. In all, 32 youth members attended the events, which fostered a deeper understanding of intellectual disabilities and the talents of Special Olympics athletes. Singing and dancing were part of the activities, but the Special Olympics athletes were eager to hit the football pitch. They were excited to partner with the Red Cross youth leaders as an opportunity to practice for their upcoming regional tournament! Later this year, Special Olympics and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will formalize a global partnership to integrate people with intellectual disabilities into international development and humanitarian initiatives.
