As the gold medal was placed around his neck at Summer Games, Special Olympics Virginia athlete Chas Cohen looked up to the stands and said, “We did it, Dad.” And they definitely did. Chas, who is one of three triplets, all with intellectual disabilities, started out in Special Olympics swimming just 25 meters. At this year’s Games, he took gold in the 200M backstroke. “Watching your child do something they didn’t think they could do, and you weren’t even sure they could do, is such an incredible feeling,” said Chas’ Dad, Tom Cohen. “Plus, nothing beats that big, wet hug you get as they climb out of the pool and share that accomplishment with you.”
