A Fulfilling Experience

By Bruce Saxe

Having been a long time financial donor to Special Olympics, I had considered becoming a volunteer/coach, but always thought that emotionally I probably wouldn't be able to do it. A few weeks ago I decided to volunteer at the Ohio State summer games. Without a doubt it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced. The organizers assigned me to the Bocce competition, where myself and a few other volunteers would escort the participants to the bocce court. From there on it was a sea of smiles, high fives, hugs and lots of laughs. The competitors were so enthused and engaging, and were really quite good at what they do. I always knew I have been blessed in my life, but being around the participants enriched my life beyond belief. I am quite sure that I came away from Columbus a better person for experiencing the love these people have to share. I will not miss another Summer Games and would encourage anyone one who needs to be uplifted to give this a try.
