Athlete Leader reaches out to her fellow youth in the Northern Cape

Omphemetse Mocumi, who is the athlete leader for the Northern Cape Province, led an event in the Francis Baard District, to encourage her peers to join Special Olympics South Africa.

She met with the youth from special schools and centers in her area which included: Kimberly Training Centre, Jannie Brink, Yonda Special School and Boitumelo Special School.

She was elected to be a member of the Special Olympics Athlete Input Council as the athlete recruiter during the 2016 Provincial Coordinators meeting in Midrand, South Africa. After her selection, she set out her plan to find a way to empower athletes and most importantly get the youth to participate in the Special Olympics movement in South Africa.

Omphemetse is the head girl of her school. With the help of her mentor, Evlyn Siyoko, Omphemetse continues to set a shining example to her community with the formation of netball teams with a neighboring school called Ba’One Intellectually Disabled Centre. She encourages the youth in her community to follow suit.
