Athlete leaders receiving their participation certificates at the end of the workshop
Special Olympics Europe Eurasia organised their first Athlete Leader Train-the-Trainer Health and Fitness Workshop during World Winter Games. Fourteen athlete leaders and 14 mentors from across the region attended. The European Union supported the workshop focused on health promotion, nutrition and fitness modules with a combination of theory and practical sessions equipping each participant with new skills. Special Olympics Malta athlete leader Gilmour Borg said, “this has been one of my greatest Special Olympics experiences, I will truly treasure every memory." The event was a huge success and will lead to a significant increase in athlete-led trainings. The next step of this project will comprise of a series of Health and Fitness Workshops led by each athlete leader in their own country in 2017. The workshop was led by Maureen Clarke of Special Olympics Europe Eurasia and was supported by a team of trainers: Amanda Dimech from Special Olympics Malta; Dr. Alan Armstrong and Dr. Daniela Schwarz (Technical University Munich and Special Olympics Germany).
