We interviewed Lesego Mokgothu, one of the coaches trained during the Special Olympics South Africa Grass roots Skills for life coaches training. It was held at Learamele Special School, Kuruman.
Lesego started working with individuals with an intellectual disability last year with a program called Special Friday where he and his colleagues would visit local special schools and implement fitness through traditional dance.
The Skillz for Life initiative was very interesting, he said. As much as he has been volunteering in special schools, being a part of this Skills for life coaches training exposed him to new ways of teaching. And not just as a fitness instructor but on how to be a life coach for individuals living with and without Intellectual disabilities.
He said that the training helped build him personally and has taught him how to communicate with athletes as well as help break down the discrimination against people with an intellectual disability in his community.
