Pheto Tebanne from Akonhoek, who participated as a partner during the Special Olympics South Africa grassroots “Skillz for life” holiday camp that took place in Nelspruit, expressed what an amazing,beautiful journey this week long holiday camp was for him.
He shared with us that this was his first time he got to learn about Special Olympics South Africa as a whole as well as the “Skillz for life” curriculum.
He also mentioned that he has witnessed a lot of peers around his community get bullied and made fun of because of their disability and this curriculum made him realize that by not standing up for either of them in way makes him one of the bullies
Pheto expressed how informative the “Skills for Life” program was for him and that due to lack of information in his community the stigma still exists. He hopes that with the knowledge he has accumulated he will be able to help change the mind-set of his fellow peers in his community.
