The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has been supporter Special Olympics since 2007.

History of Support

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation launched a partnership with Special Olympics in 2007 by providing funding for the 2007 Special Olympics Team USA delegation and the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.  Since then, Bank of America has continued to support the movement by providing funding for the 2009 Special Olympics Team USA delegation, the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, the 2010 Workforce Development Town Hall, and in 2011 made a three-year commitment including support for the 2011 Special Olympics Team USA delegation and Healthy Athletes.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation provided support for the 2010 Developing an Inclusive Workforce Town Hall where representatives from Special Olympics and Bank of America presented a day-long forum to assess job opportunities and levels of inclusion in the workplace for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Representatives from advocacy groups and federal agencies outlined the need for increased job opportunities, the importance of integration in work settings and examined current obstacles to employment for individuals with disabilities.

Through the generosity of the Foundation, Special Olympics Team USA was able to train and send approximately 330 athletes, 84 coaches and 50 support personnel to compete in the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho. Team Bank of America volunteers cheered on Special Olympics athletes at the Special Olympics Team USA Training Camp and at send-off receptions for athletes in cities across the country. In addition to the continued support for Special Olympics Team USA, Bank of America provided support for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games by becoming the Presenting Sponsor of the Founders Reception held in honor of the Founder of the Special Olympics movement, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

In 2007, the partnership with Special Olympics provided an engagement platform for Bank of America, not only at the national level, but also at the local level. Team Bank of America volunteers were on hand at various events, from a training camp in Nashville, Tennessee, to a celebration send-off event in Los Angeles, California, cheering on Special Olympics athletes who were preparing to take part in the 2007 World Games. Additionally, local Bank of America banking centers in markets ranging from Florida to Oregon took part in a variety of events celebrating the participation of local Special Olympics athletes in the 2007 World Games. Bank of America also highlighted their support for Special Olympics Team USA through a national satellite media tour with Special Olympics Global Ambassador Scott Hamilton and Special Olympics athletes that took place during the training camp.

Bank of America's support for the 2007 World Games was part of a joint philanthropic effort with China Construction Bank. In addition to the funding support for the Games, China Construction Bank launched a national cause marketing campaign encouraging its consumers to donate RMB 10 to the World Games. In return, the consumers received a free postcard featuring artwork designed by Special Olympics athletes. During the World Games, Bank of America and China Construction Bank executives presented the Games Organizing Committee with a check for RMB550,000 raised by the campaign.
