“Mission: Inclusion” Alive in Australia

By David Evangelista

From its founding in 2010, the Sydney Special Olympics Lions Club Inner West of Australia had a clear focus: to support people with intellectual disabilities. Now, as part of our expanded partnership with Lions Clubs International, “Mission: Inclusion”, this Lions Club has become the first with a Special Olympics focus in Asia Pacific. “It was a natural fit…all it took was to hit the football pitch with the athletes during one Unified match, and the rest is history,” said Peter McGhee, one of the club’s founders. The club has become a strong supporter of Special Olympics Australia and the 2013 Asia Pacific Regional Games. Through fundraising and member activation, they recently presented Special Olympics Australia with a check for $4,000 in support of the Healthy Athletes Health Promotion program at the Games. They will also take part in celebrations honoring Lions Clubs International President Barry Palmer, who will visit Newcastle to celebrate the first-ever regional event.
