A Green Banner that Means Hope

By Charles Nyambe

Teams hoist the Football for Hope/FIFA banner.

The green Football For Hope banner was raised at the beginning of every match to highlight the importance of the program in the African region. Football For Hope, a FIFA program, has been running in Africa since 2006, supported by grants from FIFA. So far, 12 countries in Africa have benefitted from the project, and almost all of them attended the tournament. Special Olympics, through the Football For Hope Program, has three goals: increase awareness, acceptance and wellbeing of people with intellectual disability. Unified Football, which brings together people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same teams, is a great way to achieve all three.

About Charles Nyambe: I am director of program development and sports for Special Olympics Africa.
