We were reminded this week of the power of Special Olympics to unleash the human spirit when one of the world's most celebrated soccer players posted on his instagram account what it felt like to spend time with Special Olympics athletes. Brazilian soccer star and FC Barcelona defender, Dani Alves wrote: “A simple hug from someone you admire may not mean much to the bystander but it can only be understood, in the purity in which it is given, by the one who receives. Thanks to everyone at Special Olympics for the love, respect and opportunity to enjoy these treasured moments.”
Alves is an Ambassador for Special Olympics and met with athletes recently in Barcelona to promote Special Olympics European Football Week 2014. This is one week of the year when the wider soccer community come together to promote more opportunities in the game for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
