Athletes In Indiana “TRAIN” For 2014 Special Olympics USA Games

By Lynn Erickson

Tommy Silva, an athlete from Indiana, participates in TRAIN and Health Promotion activities during the 2013 Indiana State Summer Games in Terre Haute.

In an effort to work with athletes throughout the state in preparation for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, Special Olympics Indiana with help from Finish Line is activating TRAIN (Testing Recreational Activities and Improving Nutrition) at local, regional and state events. Stephanie Young, a strength and conditioning coach at St. Vincent Sports Performance and former Special Olympics Healthy Athletes clinical director, along with her colleagues at St. Vincent Sports Performance are developing nutrition and exercise programs for interested athletes. Young describes this as a pilot program to determine how Indiana can improve and evolve its health and wellness programs. Indiana also piloted this at the 2013 Special Olympics Indiana State Summer Games.

“This year at Summer Games we did what we called TRAIN on ‘adrenaline,’” said Young. “It was under a 90’x120’ tent with a basketball and obstacle course in the middle. We had nutrition stations, photo stations, stretching stations, autograph stations, a bike simulator station, agility stations, a family education area, and that’s just a taste of everything the program we are developing contains. In essence, we took the educational piece of Health Promotion and the physical activity part, combined it, and expanded it. It proved to be a very popular event at our Summer Games that demonstrated the excitement and determination among Special Olympics athletes to meet their potential.”
