Emerald and Santo Domingo in the Finals of the National Special Olympics Unified Football Tournament

By Carlos Lazo

The semifinals on Thursday July 4 were great parties. At 9 a.m., Esmeraldas, the team with the most gold medals in national games in football, faced the Manabi, surprising them and eliminating their team in the quarterfinals. The game ended 0-0 and in a penalty shootout, luck was for "Green Province" which was awarded the victory 4-3. At 11 a.m., the same way on Court House Synthetic Selection 2nd semifinal was played, the team of Napo, Pichincha faced Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. The team began football practice just 4 years ago. An inspired Carlos Briones was top scorer of the tournament with 18 goals. Santo Domingo led Napo 7-0, a thrashing. Now tomorrow's game will be a meeting between the highest scoring team in the tournament, Santo Domingo with 36 goals against scoreless Esmeraldas.
