Great new partnerships and a golfing year ahead for Special Olympics Zimbabwe

By Mrs Viola Musariri

Special Olympics Zimbabwe has partnered with the Royal Harare Golf Club and the Chapman Golf club to kick off a great golf year for the program. The Special Olympics Zimbabwe athletes have been offered an opportunity to train at one of Zimababwe's highest ranking golf clubs and a team of dedicated volunteer coaches share their golfing skills every Thursday with over 150 athletes to help grow the golfing population. A number of special schools have taken advantage of this opportunity to sign up their students and increase competition opportunities for their Special Olympics athletes. During the month of March, a provincial golf tournament was hosted which attracted approximately 60 athletes. The tournament was made possible by the efforts of two Special Olympics Zimbabwe volunteers Mrs. Cathy Riley of the Chapman Golf club and Mr. Mike Baylies of the Royal Harare Golf club. Special Olympics Golf is a club and ball sport in which competing players (or golfers) use many types of clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a golf course using the fewest number of strokes. The game is played on golf courses that feature a unique design and typically consist of either 9 or 18 holes. The event was sponsored by Toyata Zimbabwe; and the Toyata Marketing Team and Director, Mr. Carl Varga joined in the day’s activities. Pathfinder Luxury Coaches, transported Special Olympics Zimbabwe athletes to the competition ensuring that the teams from around Harare and Bulawayo got to the venue safely and in time to participate. The growth of golfing in Special Olympics Zimbabwe has made the program eligible to participate at the prestigious Macau World Golf Master Competition in Hong Kong during the month of May 2014. Great work Special Olympics Zimbabwe!
