Les Is A New Fan!

By Alexandra Dickinson, Isabelle Ryder and Chloe William

Les enjoys his time supporting the Aussie footballers at the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games, his first international Special Olympics event.

The Special Olympics spirit was encapsulated in the depth of the dedicated supporters who come from all areas of the globe to cheer on athletes at the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games which were held in Newcastle NSW 1-7 December 2013. One man who was very visible throughout the Games was Leslie Phillips from Sydney who travelled to Newcastle to check out Australia’s largest sporting event for people with an intellectual disability.’ Les has embraced the Australian sports culture and has regularly cheered on the Aussies at different international sporting events such as the Sydney 2000 Paralympics, Beijing 2008 Paralympics and the 2013 Paralympic Games in London last year. Les also religiously follows the Sydney University Women's Wheelchair Side and travels to watch them all around Australia. Les enjoyed his time in Newcastle and credited the volunteers for ‘doing a great job and making the Games wonderful. The athletes of course did themselves proud."
