On December 3, the International Day of People
with Disability, 20 athletes together with our national family coordinator, and
4 coaches were invited to an official function which took place at the state
house in Blantyre, Malawi. For the first time, the president of Malawi, Her
Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, recognized Special Olympics Malawi, stating in her
speech that she appreciated the good job we are doing -- providing sports to
people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the Minister of Sports
Irene Kachere in her speech encouraged parents who have children with
intellectual disabilities to participate in Special Olympics activities such as
sports and Healthy Athletes.
