Michael does his personal best

By Alexandra Dickinson, Isabelle Ryder and Chloe William

Michael van Wilgenburg from Victoria is an Aussie athletics champion.

According to his coach, young athlete Michael van Wilgenburg is a sports 'all rounder'. At the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games he competed in long jump, the mixed 4 x 400m relay and the 400m track event coming home with a bronze medal in the relay and gold in the long jump with a personal best jump of 4.72 metres, 13 centimetres more than his previous best. A fourth place ribbon was also a good effort in the 400m, particularly after he had been sent to hospital earlier with heatstroke. Michael was very pleased with his efforts as a first-time Australian representative and said, ‘Special Olympics has given me and many others opportunities to achieve goals that we couldn’t have dreamed of before. I can’t believe I just represented Australia.’
