Middle East-North Africa Youth Activation Summit

By Nibal Fetouni

2014 SOMENA YAS celebrating unity!

In parallel with Special Olympics North Africa Unified Football Cup, 25 youth with and without Intellectual Disability, representing 6 Special Olympics programs in the Middle East/North Africa Region joined the youth activation summit: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Libya, Tunisia, Lebanon and Egypt the hosting program. The agenda included different interactions including outside lecturers who discussed specific issues relevant to youth as leadership, school integration, unified sports concepts, building partnership and public speaking. Youth had the opportunity to watch live and evaluate a unified football game between Special Olympics Libya and Special Olympics Algeria and to meet with the football legend Pele for a group photo (a session not intended and which was appreciated by all). A lot of interactive sessions were planned to bring youth together as team work, sharing challenges and best practices, setting goals. 2 goals were assigned as obligatory: carrying the r-word campaign on the 5th of March 2014 or any other school/university day and celebrating EKS day on September 20th, 2014.
