Special Olympics Athletes at Global Forums

By David Evangelista

Jared Niemeyer and Lucy Meyer

In early June, Special Olympics athletes Jared Niemeyer and Lucy Meyer traveled to New York City to represent Special Olympics at two global forums – The United Nations Conference of States Parties to the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the meeting of UNICEF's Global Partnership on Children with Disabilities Youth Council – where they addressed key representatives from the United Nations, UNICEF and civil society, speaking about their hopes for equality for all children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and the critical need to include those with ID in the post-2015 development agenda. Jared and Lucy provided global recognition of the power of using sport as a catalyst for inclusive development worldwide. They were also warmly welcomed by UNICEF’s Executive Director, Anthony Lake, during a reception introducing the Youth Council to members of the Global Partnership on Children with Disabilities, together with Caryl Stern, CEO of the US Fund for UNICEF.
