Special Olympics Brookings Moves Mountains

By Suzy Gehring

I have been involved with Special Olympics Brookings since 1992. When I started, there were 3 coaches and 12 athletes. Now, Special Olympic Brookings involves over 20 coaches/volunteers and 60 athletes. Our team traveled on a charter bus to participate at our State Summer Games in Spearfish, SD. We were fortunate enough to have time before our games to sight see. Our bus driver dropped us off at Mount Rushmore and a tour guide provided us with history about this remarkable landmark in South Dakota. Our Special Olympic athletes were proud to be part of a state with such spectacular presidents smiling down on all our successes. Experiences as this brings us all together closer as a family. It is my dream that in 2036, Special Olympics will have over 50 volunteers/coaches and 200 athletes to continue on with our tradition.

About Suzy Gehring: Suzy Gehring is a second grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary in Brookings, SD. She is also a Special Olympics coach for the Brookings schools and communities. He husband, Scott also coaches. Her kids (Sung Ha, Myung Ha, Olivia and Wes) volunteer for Special Olympics Brookings during different events.
