Special Olympics Nigeria celebrates EKS day

By Ms Dolapo Adedapo

Special Olympics Nigeria (SON) hosted a Young Athletes Program in commemoration of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, held at the Atunda-Olu Special School, Surulere, Lagos. This initiative drew a total of 34 family members, coaches and volunteers to watch the progress of event. The event was opened by the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Folashade Micheal, she was followed by event coordinator for SON who welcomed guests, and speeches ended with a brief orientation by Mr Adeola Oladugba on the Special Olympics founder’s vision and mission. The Young Athletes participated in many activities, which included; walking and running, balance and jumping, catching and throwing, and other obstacle course activities. Seeing their children interact and being given a platform to prove their potential and ability through sport brought family members much joy. One of these family members Mrs. Afolayinka was moved to tears of joy when she saw her daughter Miss. Kafaya Afolayinka’s capabilities and full participation in all the activities. “I am so grateful for the opportunities created by Special Olympics Nigeria through the Young Athletes Program. It has changed my perspective about my daughter’s abilities.”
