Special Olympics and Lions Clubs Partner in Afghanistan

By Lynn Erickson

Special Olympics and Lions Clubs International worked together to host a Family Health Forum and MedFest clinic for Special Olympics athletes and families in Kabul, Afghanistan, at the Aliabad Hospital. Family Health Forums are events that focus on local health needs, and this forum provided education on healthy living for all of the families and athletes in attendance. Follow-up care also was provided through the partnership with Aliabad Hospital. “All families who attend the forum and MedFest clinic are new to these kinds of activities. They are thrilled to attend and learn new knowledge,” shared Avi Tania, Healthy Athletes specialist for Special Olympics Asia Pacific. “Also, the hospital is kind enough to do further treatment on the spot for athletes as part of their support.” These events were coordinated by Special Olympics Afghanistan MedFest Clinical Director Dr. Mohammad Jawed Hashmi, Aliabad Hospital, Afghanistan Ministry of Health, and Special Olympics Afghanistan National Director Mr. Sayed Hewad Akbari. A total of 50 people participated.
