Standup Paddling joins Special Olympics in Florida

By Tom Fucigna Jr.

The Second Annual Monroe Invitational, held October 13th in Key West was “A huge celebration of our athlete’s joy and love of the sport of standup paddling.”

Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated group who embody the mission of Special Olympics in true Aloha spirit, Florida has begun offering standup paddling as a competition sport. County-level Special Olympics standup paddling events have served as a catalyst for volunteer involvement and support by professional paddlers, racers, outfitters and manufacturers who have donated equipment, training locations and coaching expertise. State officials have formed a Standup Paddling Management Committee that has been training coaches statewide. Everyone involved been amazed by the athlete’s progress, and they see the multi-faceted values in this kind of training. See the whole story and more pictures at the link below.
