After a 3-year absence the Special Olympics Africa family is thrilled to welcome back Special Olympics Mali. We are extremly happy that the Special Olympics Africa region is again able to reach out to people with intellectual disabilities in Mali.
An official announcement took place at the offices of the Malian National Olympics Committee and was attended by First Lady, Mrs. Keita Aminate Maiga, Special Olympics Mali Board Chair, Ms. Hamchetou Maiga-Ba, celebrities, athletes and family members.
Special Olympics athlete and founding member of Special Olympics Mali, Djemba Traore, expressed her gratitude at the announcement and shared her excitement at the return of the Special Olympics Mali program . Djemba faced difficulties at school because of her learning disability, but, despite these challenges she overcame many obstacles. Today Djemba works as a teacher’s assistant at a centre for children with an intellectual disability. Djemba is very proud to be a founding member of Special Olympics Mali.
Special Olympics is non-profit organization that offers year round Olympic-type sports and health for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
