Youths come together in Greece for cycling event

By Joanna Despotopoulou

The General Secretariat for Press, the Municipality of Ilion and Special Olympics Hellas (Greece), joined forces on 9 March 2014 to promote Project UNIFY through a community cycling activity. More than 200 Special Olympics Hellas athletes, 120 mainstream schools students and 150 volunteers, wearing their helmets and uniforms, jumped on their bikes for the 5.4 km tour of Ilion. Secretary General for Press Mr Ioannis Panayiotopoulos, Mayor of Ilion Mr Nikos Zenetos and Special Olympics Hellas President Joanna Despotopoulou were on hand to greet the cyclists. “Events like this provide us with an excellent opportunity for creating positive climates and ensuring that young people, including those with intellectual disabilities, become part of the social fabric of the community,” said Mrs. Despotoulou. The event was held on the occasion of the 5th International Conference ‘’Disability and Mass Media: Integration and Crisis in the Digital Era.’’
