And it showed at each event including Kayaking at Marine Stadium in Long Beach. Four Team Ireland athletes competed - Nuala Browne, Rita Quirke, Nicola Higgins and Ian Staunton. All had great support. Rita's two cousins Deirdre and Mary traveled down from New York for Rita's first time meeting her cousin Mary. Her three sisters and brother travelled from her home town of Mullingar. Nicola's sisters, cousin, aunts and niece all attended too. She's been kayaking for the past 15 years and was the first athlete to represent Team Ireland in kayaking when the World Games were held in Ireland in 2003. Nicola's sister, Andella said, "Nicola is having the time of her life in LA. She's already informed us that she isn't going home! But she couldn't not return with her teammates. They are such a tight team and have been inseparable since we got here."

Will loves music, Power Rangers and Transformers. As a young boy, he carried a Transformer figurine with him everywhere he went. One could say Will has truly taken the supernatural character to heart. As an 18-year-old, Will has overcome many obstacles in his life. For instance, Will had a liver transplant in 2006, but that didn’t slow him down for long. His personality is infectious. When you meet him, you can’t help but smile and be inspired by him. For more than 8 years, Will has competed in basketball, bocce, bowling, soccer, and kayaking. Most recently, Will was selected as a member of Team USA to compete in kayaking at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles. Will attributes his growth in self-confidence to the opportunity of competing in competitive sports with Special Olympics Georgia. Congratulations to Will for being December’s Athlete of the Month!
