Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 Logo Unveiled

Inclusive design process integrated Special Olympics athletes
The logo has the Special Olympics logo in the middle surrounded by bright and colorful shapes including the Berlin Bear, Brandenburg Gate, Fernsehturm Tower, a heart and a circle.

Berlin, Germany, 14 December 2021: The logo for the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 was unveiled. It illustrates what athletes and visitors can expect at the world’s largest sport and humanitarian event: cheer, color, vibrance, and unity. The process of designing the logo was inclusive of Special Olympics athletes, and their inputs informed the symbols and color scheme. Symbols of Berlin are recognizable in the logo, including the Brandenburg Gate, TV Tower, and bricks from the Berlin Wall.

“Special Olympics athletes from around the world contributed their ideas and feelings to design the logo,” said Albert Tuemann, Chief Marketing and Communications officer of the Local Organizing Committee for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. “In Berlin, the fall of a wall played a crucial role in bringing people together, and the 2023 World Games will dismantle the barriers many people hold about people with intellectual disabilities and will instead build bridges to unity and inclusion.”

"The logo is beautiful and represents the ideas of the athletes very well," commented Stefanie Scherer, Special Olympics Germany athlete.

“The logo wonderfully conveys what the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 are all about: a festival by athletes for athletes,” said Christiane Krajewski, Chair of the Games Local Organizing Committee and President of Special Olympics Germany. “It illustrates what athletes and visitors can expect at the world’s largest sport and humanitarian event: cheer, color, vibrance, and unity!”

More than 7,000 athletes from almost 200 countries are expected to converge for the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. They will compete in 26 different sports and will be supported by 20,000 volunteers.

“We are delighted to bring the world’s largest inclusive sporting event to Berlin with the support of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and the state of Berlin,” says Sven Albrecht, CEO of the Local Organizing Committee and Managing Director of SO Germany. “The 2023 World Games will provide a boost for inclusion in German society and improve the everyday lives of people with intellectual disabilities.”

Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 will be held from 17 to 25 June 2023. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Games or other associated events can apply at www.berlin2023.org/volunteers.

The logo reveal was part of a production made at the studios of Sky Deutschland, a partner of Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023.
