June 29th, 2011, in Athens, Greece a proclamation was signed between the International Federation of Volleyball and Special Olympics proclaiming the FIVB’s unanimous support of and affinity for Special Olympics and its volleyball players. The FIVB and Special Olympics have pledged to promote each other’s organizations while engaging their regional and national governing bodies and programs to grow the sport of volleyball and increasing opportunities for individuals with an intellectual disability to improve their skills and demonstrate their capabilities while using sport to create more inclusive communities worldwide.
The FIVB's Volleyball Your Way initiative and Special Olympics signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 18 August 2016. It marked their joint commitment to engage their regional and national governing bodies to leverage the power of Special Olympics Unified Sports®. They resolved to support Special Olympics athletes in their trainings and competitions. The goal is to create inclusive communities on and off the volleyball court.
The renewal of The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed during the ceremony at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 in Germany’s capital. As part of the MOU, the FIVB and Special Olympics will now collaborate on various projects, including knowledge transfer programmes, joint sponsorship efforts, the cross promotion of athletes and working together for the development of volleyball worldwide.
