Inclusive Gyms

The gym should be a place for people of all abilities to get fit and stay healthy. For people with intellectual disabilities this experience can often be challenging. How can gym owners and trainers create a space where everyone feels comfortable and included?

We explored this question with the trainers at an Anytime Fitness gym in Maryland. See what they learned, and email us your ideas on how gyms can be more inclusive of people with intellectual disabilities.

Learn about the importance of fitness for people with intellectual disabilities and how gyms can make simple changes to accommodate people of all abilities.

Inclusive Fitness E-Learning Module

A free 1-hour training for fitness professionals to maximize their skillset for working with people with intellectual disabilities. If you are certified with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), you will earn 0.1 ACE continuing education credits.

Fitness for the Sports Coach

Summary: Physical fitness is central to the Special Olympics mission. This course will introduce coaches to fitness and will help them to plan purposefully and creatively to integrate fitness into sport training and to engage their athletes in fitness activities.

Who is this for? Special Olympics coaches at any level and in any sport.

Key Learning: The course will explore: Intellectual disability (ID), Health disparities and barriers to participation experienced by individuals with ID, integrating fitness into sports programmes and strategies to support communication, instruction and motivation.
