The Special Olympics Unified Cup 2022 presented by Toyota, will take place in Detroit, Michigan, USA, bringing together athletes from all walks of life to compete in the world’s most popular sport, football (soccer), and to learn more about inclusion, competition, and how to unify the world through sport.
From 31 July – 6 August 2022, Detroit will host as many as 32 men’s and women’s football teams—nearly 600 athletes with and without intellectual disabilities—from up to 31 nations. The announcement was held on 28 July 2021 at the Detroit City Clubhouse. Tim Hileman, President and CEO of Special Olympics Michigan, made the official announcement, while Anthony Banies, Special Olympics Athlete Leader, Deputy Mayor of Detroit Conrad Mallett, Michigan Senator Adam Hollier, SAY Detroit Executive Director Marc Rosenthal, and Shinichi Yasui, EVP Toyota Motor North America, all gave remarks at the announcement event, which took place on National Soccer Day.”
