Travis Sherrer has participated in Special Olympics Alaska Mat-Su community program for several years. He serves on the community management team as an athlete representative. He is also a Health Messenger.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Travis and Special Olympics Alaska staff created videos called “Talking Time with Travis”, to encourage the athletes to keep exercising at home, reminding them to eat healthy food, drink water, and stay positive during lockdown. Travis also used the radio to share his messages of encouragement. As a Health Messenger, Travis likes to find innovative ways to help his fellow athletes to stay happy and healthy.
Travis plays floor hockey, bowling, bocce, and golf. When he is not competing, he attends the games as a water boy to make sure his teammates stay well-hydrated. Travis enjoys playing floor hockey alongside his brother who is a unified player. He says it enables them to practice inclusion as a family. This shows why Travis was awarded Special Olympics Alaska’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2020 and the Sherrer family won Family of the Year in 2021.
Besides attending community management meetings, Travis leads stretches for the local community’s Law Enforcement Torch Run®. He energizes them for the run and encourages the rest of the Special Olympics Alaska Health Messengers to do the same in their communities.
